I’ve always considered myself to be a ‘healthy’ person, but ironically, it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 23 that I began to understand the true meaning of the word.
Ever since I was a young kid I’ve been intrigued with the human body, as well as had a keen interest in science and nutrition. My love for all of those topics is what sent me on the path to becoming a qualified health professional.
I often like to say; diabetes is a very small part of what makes me Drew. I’m an exercise physiologist, diabetes educator, sports scientist, and most importantly – I’m a happy and healthy guy thriving with type 1 diabetes.
Sure, my world shifted when I was first diagnosed, but after making positive changes to the way I live, eat, move and approach life, I can honestly say I am happier and healthier today than I was before my diagnosis. So in a way you could say that diabetes gave me the gift of health.
Since being diagnosed with diabetes, life has been one big self-experiment, and the cool thing is - I've been the subject and the lead scientist! I’ve made countless mistakes and discovered just as many solutions. Perhaps the greatest discovery of all is that a healthy lifestyle is not only an effective way for me to manage my condition, but rather it allows me to thrive with my condition.
That’s why I created my website Drew’s Daily Dose. I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge with other people. I want to empower them to take control of their health, so that like me, they can thrive too!
I created a 5-pillar-approach to healthy living which I attribute my successful management of diabetes to. One of the pillars is Nutrition. This is where Sneaky Wholefoods comes into the picture. I follow a grain-free, gluten-free, paleo, low(er) carb, real, whole food way of eating which has allowed me to achieve a 70% reduction in total insulin requirements. My approach to nutrition is very well aligned with Sneaky Wholefoods which is why I am so excited to be on board as an ambassador.
As somebody living with type 1 diabetes, it is vital that I have a snack on me at all times in case my blood sugar levels drop below the normal range. The conventional approach to treating low blood sugar levels is to eat jelly beans and other confectionary but I just couldn’t accept that. I knew there had to be a healthy alternative out there. That’s when I discovered Sneaky Wholefoods. I am so thrilled that they have created a range of products that cater to my healthy eating preferences. I make sure that I have a bar or ball on me at all times of the day.
