When after-school pick-up turns into snack negotiations (and what actually helped)

After-school pick-up has officially turned into snack-time negotiations at our house.

My daughter started Kindy just two weeks ago (please don’t ask me where that time went... I’m still looking for it), and almost every afternoon goes something like this:

“Mum, I want food.”

And honestly? Fair enough.

Kindy days are big. They’re full of learning, emotions, new friendships, and stimulation, and by the time we get to the car, she’s hungry, tired, and in need of comfort.

The car snack helps… but then comes round two

A good friend of ours, a teacher and mum herself, suggested keeping a snack ready for the car ride home. It acts as a bridge between school and home and gives kids a chance to decompress after the day.

And she was right.
The car snack works beautifully.

But the moment we walk through the front door?
The hunger comes back.
The pantry door opens.
The negotiations begin.

Trying a different after-school snack routine

Yesterday, I decided to try something new.

She still had her usual car snack, but as we headed back to the car I mentioned I had a fun kitchen activity planned for when we got home, something we could do together.

And here’s what happened:

  • She got involved in making her snack
  • She happily ate two protein balls (an absolute win)
  • She started telling me about her day (without me even asking)
  • No pantry scavenging
  • No repeated “Mum, I’m hungry” before dinner

Snack time turned into a moment of calm, creativity, and connection.

Why it worked (especially after school)

Post-school hunger is on a whole new level, but there was something about making the snack together that changed everything.

Here’s why it worked so well:

  • Kids love being hands-on, it keeps them engaged
  • Protein Ball Mix + simple ingredients, filling, balanced snack
  • When they’re focused on creating, you get a few minutes to breathe

It wasn’t just about food.
It was about slowing down, reconnecting, and letting her take the lead after a big day

It’s only week three of Kindy, and while chaos still reigns, I’m doing my best to turn this into a little ritual we share.

It won’t always be making protein balls. Some afternoons it will be prepping homemade pizzas together (a great way to get extra veggies in). Other days, it might be making a Strawberry Weet-a-Bix slice for her school lunch box for the weeks ahead.

Real life is messy - snacks shouldn’t be

Life with kids is busy. Loud. Messy. Beautiful, but full.

Snacks shouldn’t add more stress to already-full days.

That’s exactly why our Protein Ball Mixes exist - to support real-life moments like these. They’re simple, better-for-you, and designed for those times when you want nourishment without the overwhelm.

Because sometimes, the best snack isn’t just the one that fills them up -
it’s the one that brings a little calm back into the day.

With love (and a little after-school snack magic),
